How Alexa Havins’ Family Plays a Key Role in Her General Hospital Success

Alexa Havins explained how she and her husband Justin Bruening have coordinated their lives to incorporate much needed closeness.
Alexa Havins was thrust into a majorly dramatic storyline on General Hospital when she took on the role of Lulu Spencer. Trying to get her life back together after emerging from a years-long coma has been daunting for Lulu. But Havins has her real life all sorted out. She recently opened up about how she and her family work in tandem so she can continue to bring viewers the entertaining steamroller that is Lulu.

She Wanted to Be Closer to Her Family
Havins took time out of her busy schedule to speak with Soap Opera Digest recently and opened up about her crazy home life. Havins had retired from acting so that she and her husband, Justin Bruening, could take care of their four children. They met when they both appeared on All My Children and married in 2005.

She explained that she had stepped away from acting because “it seemed like the right thing to do” for her family. She found that when she was away working on a project, she missed her children terribly. “Justin was working more, and we wanted to keep the family together and travel with him.”

He’s Her Support System
Havins and Bruening decided that the children came first, and it wasn’t right for them not only to be away as parents but also be away from each other. So, the couple implemented a limit that would guide them through their happy marriage: “We have a maximum amount of time we’re willing to be apart.” Being together more often has strengthened their family bond.
When it comes to Bruening’s participation in family matters, Havins had nothing but praise. “He’s my child care, he’s our substitute teacher because we home school, and he’s my professional line reader,” she remarked. She also explained that she’ll bring home scripts in a large stack, “And slam it down in front of him and I say, ‘All right, let’s do this! Let’s run these lines!’ ” He enjoys playing the parts of the other characters, and he quipped that when he plays Tracy (Jane Elliot), he reaches deep down for “That deep emotional level that Tracy has.”
