The original Matlock TV show is officially headed to a brand new streaming home.
Per Paramount+, all nine seasons of the original 1986 hit series will be making the move to the streaming platform on January 15. This marks a major moment for the franchise, especially with Matlock experiencing renewed interest thanks to the overwhelming success of the recently released reboot starring Kathy Bates.
Created by Dean Hargrove, Matlock starred Andy Griffith as the series’ titular Ben Matlock, an elderly criminal defense attorney whose experience and prowess in the courtroom are more than worth his hefty fee. The series amassed a whopping 193 episodes on top of its made-for-TV movie pilot, all in the span of just nine years. In that time, Matlock became such a prominent series that it led to an early spinoff in the form of 1987’s Jake and the Fatman starring Joe Penny and William Conrad, which itself led to the 1993 spinoff, Diagnosis: Murder, starring Dick Van Dyke.
Matlock Was Recently Rebooted With Success
The 2024 Matlock reboot was developed by Jennie Snyder Urman, who wrote the series’ first two episodes. The series stars Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, aka Madeline Kingston, who lost her daughter to the opioid epidemic and was left to care for her young grandson. Seeking revenge on the companies and firms who allowed the situation to fester throughout the United States, Matty works her way into the offices of a high-powered law firm that was responsible for shielding the pharmaceutical companies that profited from the country-wide drug crisis.
In late December, Matlock star Skye P. Marshall, who portrays Olympia on the series, promised fans that the series’ upcoming seventeenth episode is the “craziest” so far. “When you see the last two episodes,” Marshall said, “you’re going to wonder, ‘What are they going to do with Season 2 now?’ And I’m really excited about that.” Barely a month after Matlock‘s premiere, the series was renewed for a second season by CBS, ensuring that the Bates-led reboot will have plenty of room to continue surprising audiences going forward. Fans are currenlty awaiting the return of Matlock from its mid-season break, with the series’ next episode slated to arrive on CBR on January 30.
Matlock will be available for streaming on Paramount+ beginning January 15.
