There are, for better or worse, plenty of male-led serial killer dramas: Dexter, You, Hannibal, etc. Many of them are fantastic shows to watch, the sort that keep fans on the edge of their seats and watching the clock for a week when the credits roll.
And whilst critical praise often goes out to the leads of these shows along with the cast and crew, among crime shows there’s one serial killer that stands out as a queen amongst kings of crime. Her name is Villanelle, and she’s one of two stars of Killing Eve, which has once again come back to streaming services. Now, it’s free to watch.
What Is Killing Eve About?
Based on the 2017 book Villanelle by Luke Jennings, the show follows Villanelle, played by British actress Jodie Comer, who works for an organization called The Twelve. Villanelle is pursued throughout the series by Eve Polastri, portrayed by Grey’s Anatomy’s Sandra Oh, an American intelligence agent working with MI6 to track her and her organization down.
What it entails is a cat-and-mouse game where both characters form a deeply obsessive connection to each other that borders on a twisted romance. Comer’s Villanelle captured audiences with her ability to adopt a variety of disguises and over five seasons the duo won over hearts whilst putting (fictional) bullets in a few themselves.
Why Did The Series End?
The answer to the question about the show ending is a question in and of itself – primarily, is the show done for good? Although there has been no confirmed continuation by showrunners, there has been talk of spinoffs, not surprising given how popular the show was at its peak. Though perhaps some might be eager to see the duo take up the roles of hunter and prey again, the final series wasn’t the perfect ending everyone hoped for.
Ultimately, however, the show did incredibly well over its four-season run and Villanelle is widely regarded as one of Comer’s best performances which kickstarted her incredible career. Until we hear otherwise, fans will have to make due with what is already out there.
Seasons 1-4 of Killing Eve can be streamed now on Tubi.
