As Grey’s Anatomy takes a break until later in 2025, these 8 characters may be among those ready to depart the show next!
As Grey’s Anatomy takes a break until 2025, there’s a chance we’ll be bidding goodbye to some characters!
Grey’s Anatomy fans know the one constant of the show is change. Characters come and go a lot, with Meredith herself still popping in despite Ellen Pompeo talking of leaving the show. Some exits can be sudden and shocking, while others get a bigger push.
Already this season has seen the departures of Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) and Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis). As the show takes a break before returning in the spring, there’s a question of who else might depart and these eight characters all have a sad chance of no longer being on Grey’s next season
Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane)
One of the worst parts of Yasuda’s departure is that it ends her fun growing relationship with fellow intern Jules. It gave both characters some great new life and Adelaide Kane finally looked to click on the show. With Yasuda gone, it’s hard to see what could happen with Jules, as she may be lost in the shuffle of the various plotlines.
It would be nice if she continued as Kane is a good actress who is a great presence on the show. Yet if the writers think they don’t have anything for her, they may write her off with Jules leaving to find Mika and try to start a real relationship. Of all the characters, Jules may be the most likely to depart next.
Benson “Blue” Kwan” (Harry Shum Jr.)
This intern has been given a complex plotline in Season 21. It’s been revealed Kwan was engaged but when his fiancee developed amnesia after a car crash, he naturally broke it off. Said fiancee has recently returned and is starting to remember home with Kwan handling it. That’s the most interesting plot Kwan has had since joining the show, as the writers don’t care about him too much.
So later in the season can see Kwan decide to leave the hospital to fully reunite with his ex-fiancee. It’d be tricky, yet Kwan hasn’t seemed to get more attention on the show, and so is a likely candidate to be written out.
Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington)
Sadly, ever since the series was forced to write out Alex Karev years back, Jo has been a bit lost in the plotlines. She has some stuff as a foster mom and her relationship with Lincoln and Season 21 now having her expecting twins. Yet it just seems the writers have run out of good material for Jo and Camilla Luddington, who sometimes looks bored with the role.
Thus, it’s possible that, with her twins born, Jo decides to take a long break from the hospital to concentrate on motherhood. That could go longer with her fading out, not a huge sendoff, but Jo going onto a happier life with her kids and a deserved warm farewell.
Teddy Altman (Kim Raver)
It’s amazing that Teddy has lasted this long on the show, given her health scares and nearly fired over some bad moves. She’s even been a fugitive with her license suspended for a bit. This year has seen Teddy in some strange plotlines, including kissing a female doctor played by Sophia Bush. That’s put more pressure on her marriage to Owen.
Maybe something happens that finally causes Teddy to snap. She may cross one line too many and be fired in a way to mar her career. She and Owen could finally have that blowup to end their marriage. Either way, it would mean Teddy departing for a fresh start, which seems inevitable for the character.
Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen)
Sadly, there’s a very good reason why Catherine is likely gone this year on Grey’s Anatomy. Her cancer has gotten worse, and she’s tried to hide it for a while, but it’s getting too much. She’s tried to fight it and even keep it from Richard, yet even that dominating will can’t hold off the inevitable. So it’s too likely that Catherine finally succumbs to her cancer, a sad loss for the show yet also realistic to show how the doctors can’t fix everything.
Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.)
It appears that season 21 of the show is building up the idea of Richard finally facing retirement. He’s grooming others to possibly take over from him and making plans for his future. If Catherine does indeed pass away then Richard would logically be too heartbroken to keep going at the hospital. Or he could leave with Catherine to spend her last months together and then move on. Either way, it may be a departure for the long-running chief, and hopefully, it’s on better terms than fans expect.
Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone)
This may be an odd choice to depart thanks to how Amelia has been a top member of the cast for several seasons. Yet it could be a combination of Caterina Scorsone wanting to depart the role after almost 15 years and Amelia herself feeling out of sorts.
She’s been nearly fired backing up Meredith’s research and a bit on the sidelines in recent plotlines. Thus, it could be setting up an exit (especially for pay cuts) as Amelia leaves the hospital to focus on helping Meredith’s research, which may be sudden yet better than other characters.
Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales)
So far, Monica Beltran is a bit of a side recurring character on the show. She’s had a flirtation with Amelia and a brief hookup with Winston. Aside from that, Monica is mostly a side character who pops in for some surgeries but no meaty material yet.
It would be good if the writers give her more to do and more about her past but being on recurring status makes that unlikely. With word Morales was only signed for a certain number of episodes, it’s likely Beltran fades away from Grey’s Anatomy before she can become a bigger deal for the series.
